Welcome to our bucket cruise! Finally after 30 cruises we decided to ditch the flip flops and sandy beaches of the Caribbean and head west to Alaska! If you're an avid cruiser then Alaska is always going to be on your bucket list.
So what really made us book Alaska? Well like I just mentioned this was going to be our 30th cruise and we've done the Caribbean every time. We just thought it was time for something different, we've always driven to the ports in Florida and we honestly were just running out of ships and itineraries to go on. So we looked around at other options and decided to fly somewhere for a cruise (something we've never done before). Alaska was always an option that we've looked at doing and after some thought, we decided to pull the trigger and book it.
Our flight was roughly 6 hours, straight from Orlando. Honestly not bad at all of a flight. Air Alaska was who we went with, we loved the ability to charge our devices so when we landed they were at 100%. Onto Seattle, we've never been this far from home before and absolutely loved the city. I'll go more into that below. Have to say you need to spend some extra time here and enjoy the city.
As for the Norwegian Joy, well since I first saw that Bliss was being built for the market I wanted to get on Bliss, which we had booked for a day later, but at the end of the day we switched since the day earlier was a decent difference in price, and we were able to get home on a Saturday and have Sunday to relax and get caught up.
Overall NCL Joy was a great ship, just felt we could have done without it in Alaska. A smaller ship in general would have done the trick here in Alaska, also could have got you to places the larger ships could not in some cases. Not saying if you didn't find a great deal, not to do it. By all means jump on the deal. We got a pretty good deal on this cruise with a balcony so it was nice to have that. Below I will go into more detail of what we liked and disliked about the ship, ports and overall trip.
Mainly the one piece of advice we can give you is when it comes to Alaska, don't expect to see it all, it will leave you wanting more. This was our first time and already thinking about going back. Research before you go on what fits your wants and needs on this trip. Although we did a lot, and it did feel very scheduled, we felt we could have easily seen so much more in spots and didn't have a chance to fully do and see what we wanted.
Alaska was absolutely stunning and breathtaking. We highly recommend trading in the flip flops for boots and head over and do this amazing cruise. It will be one you will never forget!
Onto the tour of the Norwegian Joy along with the ports we visited during our cruise.
A-List Bar
Our first stop is the A-List Bar, located on deck 8 between Le Bistro and Cagney's Steakhouse. Here you can grab a cocktail before or after your meal.
American Diner
Outside on deck 17 towards the back of the ship you will come to the American Diner. Here you will find (for an extra charge) some tasty apps such as mozzarella sticks & nachos to sandwiches, salads and desserts. It was cold through a majority of the trip and I happened to come by while taking pictures in Skagway, which was our coldest port and it wasn't too bad in here.
Atrium
As always the main hub of most ships is the Atrium. Here the ship had tons of activities, entertainment, movies and music through the day and night. We did feel the overall activity selection was a bit limited here vs the Caribbean, they did have a good amount to do during our last sea day. Below is a taste of what they offered throughout our sailing.
(Looks like plenty of seating, but it fills up very quickly. Side seats are not too good either.)
(So amazing seeing this demo.)
(Incredible work.)
(Chocolate covered marshmallows, yum!!)
(Loved seeing them preform in the atrium as well as in Elements.)
(This game was so much fun to watch.)
(Any volunteers?)
(How'd I do?)
(Great variety of music on board.)
(Loved when he did the show tunes.)
Cagney's Steakhouse
Deck 7 is home to many restaurants (additional charge) on the Joy, Cagney's is one of those options. This is the steakhouse on board, we've yet to eat here, however did hear really good reviews during our sailing. Our main reason for not eating here is that we can get a steak any day of the week at home and didn't want to spend the extra money here for steak. You also have outside dining available as well.
(Outside dining available.)
Card Room
Tucked away in a corridor between Q Texas Smokehouse and the Atrium is the Card Room. The one thing we did not notice here was any board games. However the ship does offer those in the atrium as well as in the Observation Lounge up stairs.
Cavern Club
The Cavern Club is based off a Liverpool Club which the Beatles preformed in. Here you have a chance to check out a cover Beatles group that preformed several times throughout the sailing, along with a few other singers. I believe the Beatles Show did take reservations.
Collection Art Gallery
Next to the Social Comedy Club and Maltings Whiskey Bar, you have a small office for the Art Gallery. Art can be found between this second atrium area towards the two restaurants near the back on deck 6.
Connect Internet Cafe
Right next to the atrium, near Starbucks is the Internet computers. They do have packages available.
District Brew House
This is always one of our favorite places to hangout in during our sailings. With a great selections of drinks, this place also delivers on ambiance and relax factor. Several nights we'd hang out in here and watch the large mountains pass us by. Didn't notice any music during the nights like we had on other ships.
Entourage
This club for teens is located right inside the Galaxy Pavilion on deck 16.
Food Republic
Heading to the front of the ship, on deck 8 is Food Republic. Here you have a selection of global foods in a bright environment. The food is for an extra charge here.
Galaxy Pavilion
Located on deck 16 is something unique to Norwegian on their newer ships. The Pavilion is home to a 7D theater, VR games and tons of other things. Now we felt this was something very cool, but was it worth the price? Several months prior it was 1 price for unlimited access through your allotted amount of time. Not the games are per person, per game. So many do start around $7 and go up from there. It can add up very quickly. Honestly we felt that a discounted cost might have gotten more people here, never saw too many people here at any point. Wouldn't be shocked that Norwegian changed this space out in a few years. We did not get a chance to play here, honestly we had spent enough on the trip and wasting money here we didn't want to do.
Garden Cafe
Here we come to the buffet on Joy. Where do I start? Well the food was very lackluster and options were limited for the most part. We didn't do much breakfast here, but lunch and even dinner we did. It was a source of fuel, but nothing that stood out here for food. One thing I had almost every night was the crepe station, one joy on Joy. Most food was repetitive everyday with a couple differences here and there. I'd say the buffet on Getaway and Escape were much better than Joy. You do get some nice views here as well. A little tip here, you are just a deck above the Observation Lounge, so you can always grab food and head down there for some extra seats, since the buffet did fill up quickly during rush hours.
Guest Services Area
Right off the atrium is the Guest Services, Cruise Next & Shore Excursions desk.
Joy Casino
The Joy has a pretty decent size casino, which much like most Norwegian ships we've been on is overtaken by the strong smell of smoke. You notice is right near the smoking section which is fully enclosed, through the smaller atrium area. They also offer a section for small bites while you play.
Joy Speedway
Only a few ships in the world have an actual go-kart speedway on their ships, Norwegian is that line who does. Now you're thinking, how cool is this to have, well you're right it is pretty awesome. I was talking to a good friend of mine who just returned of Royal Caribbean on Anthem of the Seas. We discussed both ships and Royal has an advantage here, they have bumper cars that are free, while we had go-karts for an extra charge. Many things on their ship were free, such as the Indoor Skydiving, Bumper Cars and several other amenities, which to our ship had to pay extra for a lot. Pricing being similar. Royal does have sister-ship Quantum of the Seas, so that might have been (depending on price) a better option if you're looking for certain amenities on the ship. Back to the Speedway, it was really cool, never noticed many people on the track much. We did not have much time to get up here to try them out.
Joy Theater
We really miss the days when we didn't have to book shows and comedy ahead of time and just show up and watch. We had two main shows, Footloose and Elements. We were 50/50 on how Footloose was going to be, well it was not very good. They went too far off the original movie at times, making it unwatchable at times for avid fans like us. Our other show was the savior here, Elements was one of the best we've ever seen. A mixture of wind, fire, and many other elements wrapped up in a 45 minute stunning show. Highly recommend this show, loved it.
Juneau, Alaska
Juneau, Alaska - YouTube Vlog
Our second port was Juneau, Alaska. We had booked originally just a whale watching tour, then changed it once we got on board to the whale watching and Mendenhall Glacier combo tour. Side note, if you cannot get the excursion you want always check as soon as you board and throughout the cruise either at the desk or on the large touchpads throughout the ship. So our tour lasted from the moment we docked to right before we left, leaving no time at all in Juneau, which next time we really want to explore more. Our tour started via bus with our driver Big John, who stayed with us through both tours. We headed first through Juneau to the whale watching dock to board the vessel for our trip. Our tour lasted around 3 hours and it was absolutely amazing. We had plenty of moments seeing humpback whales going in and out of the water, very close to us. Also everyone (but me, since I was in the restroom.) saw a whale breach right out of the water, right in front of the ship. We would have hopefully had a photo, but I had both cameras with us during the time. After the few hours of seeing whales we headed to Mendenhall Glacier and it was just another stunning sight of Alaska. The pictures, postcards and things you see second-hand was right in front of us, truly breath-taking. We cannot wait until we come back to Juneau, such a great city with so much beautiful views. Now once we left we were supposed to see a section of glaciers, but that stop was cancelled due to too much ice in the area, our second stop was cancelled since they had too many fisherman with their lines already dropped, so we headed to a hanging glacier. We had a chance to go onto the helipad, which was opened to everyone. It was a bit chilly and they did provide blankets and soups. A few hours later we headed to another area to check out some whales and other wild life. We didn't expect much. We were at dinner and saw whale after whale after whale, we quickly ate and left. We headed outside and for a few hours, hundreds of sightings of whales, many out in the distance, also many right near us. The helipad was still opened during this time so we headed up to see this one whale who'd lay on it's back splashing and then breaching, over and over. It was amazing. Couldn't believe how many whales we saw. It beat the tour, but the tour in Juneau we'd do again in a heartbeat. We were so blown away and in awe the entire time. Even some of the crew was out watching them, since the ship won't usually come out here and they rarely see whales otherwise.
(This was within walking distance of the ship and takes you high up the mountain.)
(Heading to our boat to see some whales.)
(So close to the boat.)
(Inside our boat, this was the bottom level, two level boat.)
(Seals hanging out.)
(Amazing views!)
(Time to head over to the Mendenhall Glacier.)
(This is the main hub of the area, here you can visit the gift shop, use the restroom and view the glacier.)
(Great views inside.)
(Now we head outside.)
(Couldn't keep our eyes off this amazing view.)
(Here is the trail, we didn't have enough time to go to the falls and back, but people did run over and back in our 45 minute timeframe.)
(Our sister Norwegian Bliss.)
(One of my favorite views.)
(This was the hanging glacier we headed to after leaving Juneau.)
(Humpback whale breaching in front of the ship, over and over.)
(Maybe 50 feet away from us.)
Ketchikan, Alaska
Ketchikan, Alaska - YouTube Vlog
Our first port of the cruise was in the salmon capital of the world, Ketchikan. We did not book an excursion here and decided to take a walking tour on our own to explore the city. It was a bit rainy, which for us was fine. We headed up to Creek Street to check out the area. Was really cool seeing the salmon swim upstream, many did not make the journey, which was the horrific smell at times. As we continued to walk around we saw some harbor seals swimming around the docks, had a few moments seeing them. Then we walked around for a bit more and then onto lunch for some crab!
(This was not hard to find at all.)
(Heading up to Creek Street.)
(Made it to Creek Street, not too far of a walk, maybe 15 minutes.)
(Smell of dead salmon everywhere.)
(Hello down there!)
(Headed to Alaska King Crab Co for lunch, not too far from the ship.)
(Beer sampler.)
(Salmon tacos in the Salmon capital of the world. Delioius!)
(One thing I wanted in Alaska was King Crab, everyone recommended Tracy's in Juneau, but we were not going to have any time to get there due to our excursion. However we were really impressed with crab, very tender and tasted better than any other crab I've had before.)
La Cucina
Back on board we head over to the Italian Restaurant, La Cucina. This is an extra fee, also outside dining is available here.
Laser Tag
All the way at the top of the ship is laser tag. This is usually during the day and night at certain times, highly recommended to come during the night hours. Since we had little time at night and it was very cold most nights we did not have a chance to take in the experience. Heading back to Royal Caribbean, they also have an experience similar, but for free, while this is an additional charge.
Le Bistro
We had an opportunity to have a dining experience provided to us by Norwegian, and we decided to have a night at Le Bistro which is their signature French Restaurant. We have always wanted to do this restaurant, and we looked forward to checking it out. We booked this on our first night and it was amazing. Start to finish the staff was very great, service alone was spot-on. At times when they brought out dishes they would uncover them together in front of us, awesome. Oh yeah, the food! Well, what can I say but some of the best we've had on any cruise. Each course was just as good as the last. Would have went back every night if we could. Highly recommend Le Bistro.
(Started with bread.)
(This was the Escargots Bourguignonne, I loved this. Yes eating snails is pretty gross, but they flavor it so well that it doesn't even matter.)
(My wife went with the Salade D'Asperges Tiedes, Oranges & Canard Fume. Basically some orange slices, asparagus and smoked duck. This was also really good. I'm not a fan of duck, but overall I enjoyed it.)
(Keeping up with the French theme, I ordered a French Onion Soup. One of the best I've ever had. I have a picture down below of the French Onion Soup from the dining room, night and day difference. I really enjoyed this one.)
(The Cream of Four Mushroom Soup was really nice.)
(For my entree I went with the Rack of Lamb. I need to order Lamb more often, it's really a great alternative to beef. This was very flavorful. Have to say every time I've ever ordered lamb at any specialty dining venue on any cruise it's been one of the best meals.)
(My wife went with the Veal Medallions. We both enjoyed this dish.)
(Dessert I went with the Tarte Tatin, which was a warm apple tart. I liked this one a lot.)
(My wife went with the Profiteroles, these were also really good.)
Local
Other ships have this as a bar area with food, others named it O'Sheehans, here on Joy is the Local. Not as big as on other ships but nonetheless available 24 hours a day. We had breakfast, lunch, dinner and late night snacks here. Food much like the buffet wasn't as good as other ships we've sailed with NCL, and not much to go crazy over. Didn't care for the size, too small compared to other ships, on the inside. Around the atrium, seating and tables were still plentiful. The decor was bright and vibrant vs the darker colors before. Food is free here all day and night.
(French Toast - Breakfast)
(Corned Beef Hash - Breakfast)
(Eggs, Bacon & Hashbrowns - Breakfast)
(Pretzel Rolls with Beer Cheese Sauce - Lunch/Dinner)
(Cheese and Bacon Fries - Non-Menu Item, Special Request)
(Buffalo Wings - Lunch/Dinner) (So-so flavor, other ships were much better.)
(Chili BBQ Wings - Lunch/Dinner) (Very spicy, but good!)
(Bacon Burger & Fries - Lunch/Dinner)
(Taco Salad Bowl - Lunch/Dinner) (One of our favorite meals throughout the entire cruise!)
Malting's Whiskey Bar
Here are a few photos of one of the many bars on Norwegian Joy.
Mandara Spa
Here are some photos of the Spa area on the ship.
Manhattan Room
Here is the first of three main dining rooms on the ship. We had dinner here just a handful of times. Stuck mainly to the other two, Local and Garden Cafe, which goes to show how much we enjoyed the food here. The Manhattan Room was very opened but compacted with tables, unlike Getaway where the dance floor was empty and had live music and performances most nights. Again missing the old days.
(I believe it was on Getaway, but the dance floor was empty and they had nightly music. Not anymore.)
Mini Golf
Not the most impressive course at sea, but always fun to play, no matter if you're looking at the Space Needle or Mountains.
Mixx Bar
In between Taste & Savor is the Mixx Bar.
Observation Lounge
This was a key feature on this ship, along with Bliss and soon to be Encore. Made for, you guessed it, observing the outdoor area. Now they have plenty of seating in this lounge, stretching most of the front of deck 15 on both sides and the front. Also offer a small buffet on both sides, a bar and Starbucks up front. Speaking of up front, people were here day and night for the most part. They do not have many lounge seats so if you want one it's the roll of the dice. I say this because we come from a timezone hours a head, so when it's morning time here, we've been up for a few hours. This lounge is also great for just relaxing, board games are also available here. Since we were in Alaska and the pool deck was empty for the most part due to the cold, this was a main hot spot on the ship. Curious how it will do in the Caribbean.
(Seats in the front fill up very quickly.)
Ocean Blue
Here are some photos of Ocean Blue, which is a seafood restaurant, additional cost.
Perspectives Photography Studio
Next to the main lobby you have a chance to book a session for professional photos.
Photo Gallery
Or you can stick to the staff taking photos throughout those fun moments of your cruise. Head here and have them assist with finding your photos taken.
Pool Deck, Slides & Waves Bar
The pool deck like I mentioned above was not used very often, mainly due to the cold temperatures during our cruise. It was kind of odd to see it in the middle of the afternoon, not a soul around. They did house a gigantic movie screen and two pools. Now since this ship was originally meant for the Asian market, the pool for adults was added to the side of the deck, leaving the middle opened for a grass area, when it was refurbed a few months ago, they left the pool where it was at. Honestly I liked how they set it up. Much more space. They also had a family pool towards the back a few steps. Slides were a deck above.
Pulse Fitness Center
Here are some photos of the fitness center on board. Only thing we did fitness-wise was fit-ness pizza in my mouth!
Q Texas Smokehouse BBQ
Another eatery on board is the Texas Smokehouse, other ships this was a dinner show, which we would love. Heard the food here was good, much like the steakhouse, no point for us to come here when we have them all over at home. This is an additional cost.
Savor
Here is the second of three main dining rooms on board. Service in all the dining rooms were pretty good, food was decent overall.
(Lunch Nachos were awesome!)
(I had the Philly Cheesesteak a few years ago on Escape, it was not good. Decided to retry it and it was great.)
(This was my breakfast almost every day. Waffles with caramel and banana. Yum!!!)
(My sides, ham, corned beef hash, bacon and potatoes.)
(This Penne a la Vodka was one of the best I've ever had. Loved it.)
(The Bruschetta was my go-to app everynight.)
(Here is the nightly steak in the dining rooms. Not the greatest.)
(Here is the main dining room French Onion Soup, if someone says they enjoyed this then they must be crazy. Go to Le Bistro and get theirs, so amazing. This one sucked.)
(Fried Chicken, yummy!!!!)
(Filet Medallions and fries. So good!!)
(BBQ Ribs, seriously fall-off-the-bone and some of the best I've ever had. I'm SUPER PICKY on ribs and if these were good then trust me they were worth getting! If it wasn't 10:30pm and we weren't going home tomorrow I would have ordered another one.)
Seattle, Washington
Seattle, Washington - YouTube Vlog
This was our first time flying to a port and first time at a port outside of Florida. We flew in the day before, which is highly recommended. We got in early that Friday and took advantage of the city and what Seattle has to offer. We first were told by our hotel staff at the Holiday Inn Express (great hotel) that the city offered a free shuttles that takes you around town. So we headed on a 15 minute walk towards the Space Needle and hopped on the bus, we had to transfer to another bus since we were going to Pike Market. Now these buses run all day and are free. Great find! At the Market is an experience on it's own. Tons and tons of places to shop and eat. We had food at a few places. Make sure to check out the fish throwing and gum wall downstairs, all highlights of the Market. Tons of videos online to check them out, start on ours! After the market we took the bus over the pier area (not where our ship docks), had some more food. Everything was great! Highly recommend coming here for at least a couple days, either before or after the cruise. Great city! Then we headed to the Space Needle, my wife went up since I don't do well with heights. Then we headed back to our hotel and ordered from this restaurant in our hotel. Food was great there as well. The next morning we took a quick ride over to our pier, maybe a 10 minute drive. The terminal is small, since it's not really meant for this large of a ship. Overall Seattle was a great city that we really enjoyed visiting and would do a trip here without a cruise.
(Chowder Sampler. The New England Clam Chowder is the number one, most popular dish on Yelp. It was really good, but not the best we've had, nor the best here. I forgot which one it was but the one in the front on the right was better. Also our local restaurant, Celebration Town Tavern is a lot better, you can check out that on our Disney Addict Junkie page. But definitely worth getting.)
(Here is the place that they throw the fish over at Pike Place Market. Thought they did it more then they did. So much fun to see when they did do it.)
(Look at the price, you cannot get that here in Florida.)
(Tons of places in the market gave out free samples.)
(View of the famous, Gum Wall!)
(Gum all over the walls.)
(The oldest Starbucks.)
(Next we head over to the pier.)
(Here you can grab some Meat Pies.)
(Mac and cheese was really nice.)
(The Cherry Pie was also very good. Really recommend coming here!)
(Time for the Space Needle!)
(Inside the gift shop.)
(All the way up top.)
(Small cafe area.)
(View from outside.)
(Inside the terminal waiting room, they kept cramming people into here. The terminals are not made for ships this large.)
Skagway, Alaska
Skagway, Alaska - YouTube Vlog
Today was a day that I was kind of some anxiety about, we booked an excursion on the White Pass Railroad, up the mountain. I just got done telling you I don't like heights with the Space Needle. I did prep and watched countless videos of the train ride, to the point I knew every moment of the ride. Read horrible stories of people with the fear of heights. Now I'm very scared of heights (and other phobias), but honestly I was perfectly fine throughout the entire trip up the mountain. The views were stunning the entire time. Even went outside going over high bridges and looking over, my wife was impressed. The ride was about 3 hours and they have a bathroom in each car along with free bottled water. It does get cold up there, the cars are heated. It was funny coming back down the mountain, half the car was sleeping the entire trip down. The way the seating works, the left side is the side you see a majority of the views going up, which we recommend sitting on, the right side you will see on the way down. Would love doing this again. When we got back we planned on going to lunch, but we were getting tired so we headed back to the ship. Again we highly recommend this train ride, so much fun.
(Inside the train, remember stay on the left side of the train, right in the picture.)
(Loved every moment of this train ride.)
(Going from the US to Canada.)
(Hello Bliss! We're all the way in the back behind Bliss.)
(Snow cap mountains as we left Skagway.)
Skyline Bar
Next to the Casino is the Skyline Bar. This area is a bit smoky since the smoking part of the casino is across from the bar. We did not spend any time here, did look like a quiet place at times since it's tucked away in the casino.
Social Comedy Club
If you want to come out and see a show, make sure you book. We went during the middle of the week to the one and only show we saw. They have standby and the room was only 40% full when we went before they let that line in, so people had plenty of room to sit. The comedian was really good. The cool thing I found in this club was that in the back corner of the room is a section of tables and a bar, so you can still sit and enjoy the show, but near the bar.
(This is the bar area, away from the main area.)
Spice H20
All the way on deck 17 in the very back of the ship is Spice H20. Back here is an adults-only area that will sometimes host to the deck parties. During the day a relaxing area away from the main pool area with a bar and gigantic hot tub. We walked around here maybe twice throughout the cruise just to check it out. I don't recall if they had any parties up here, I want to say they held them indoors due to the colder weather. This will likely be a hotspot once in the Caribbean.
Starbucks (Atrium)
Right off the atrium you will come to Starbucks, the second location (first being up in the Observation Lounge). Here you can grab a coffee, latte, mochathis, mochathat, expensivatte or some pastries. All for an additional charge. It never seemed too busy throughout any part of the cruise. A tip, we did notice a Starbucks machine in the Garden Cafe, there you had a small coffee machine and Starbucks cups. I want to say that counts as a third location for Starbucks.
Stateroom (9838) (Mini Suite)
Originally we had a balcony stateroom, well originally we had an interior, then moved up to a balcony, couldn't resist the price. Yes, we originally boarded and had an everyday balcony stateroom. The room itself was fine, only bad thing was the location. We were right in front of the service door for the room steward, so every time they went in and out the door would slam shut. Luckily about a day or so into the cruise we get a call from Guest Services, asking if we'd like to change to a mini suite since the passengers did not board the ship. Now note, we did not complain about the issue at all, so this was either due to us being media or totally random. I've heard of others being asked prior to the cruise, but not usually during. So we checked out the room and switched. Now the only difference between the regular balcony stateroom and mini suite is the bathroom. It is about double in size and set up slightly different. It was nice having. The rest of the room was fine, enjoyed the balcony throughout the cruise. Well besides being woken up in the middle of the night to the ships horn, since it was foggy, just to let others know we were in the area. Norwegian also does offer room service but there is an extra fee for that.
(This was the mini suite bathroom. Rest of the room was the same.)
Sugarcane Mojito Bar
Here are some photos from the Sugarcane Mojito Bar.
Taste
The final dining room on the ship is Taste. Nightly the menus in all three dining rooms will be the same. During lunch only Taste and Savor will be opened, usually only on the first day and any sea days. Food overall was good, service was great. Everyone was very friendly.
Teppanyaki
We did the Teppanyaki on another NCL ship, we loved it. One of our favorites. This time around we stuck with Le Bistro and would have eaten there every night if we could.
The Cellars
This location is the wine bar on the ship, host to several wine events throughout the cruise. We did think to do one, but didn't end up doing a tasting, they were however reasonably priced.
Tradewinds Tax & Duty Free Shops
Shops were all pretty basic. Didn't care for how spread out it was. Didn't have many interesting items or anything that caught our eyes. Only thing that really upset me was that they didn't have a ship model in the shops. I will continue my hunt online for one.
Victoria, British Columbia, Canada
Victoria, British Columbia, Canada - YouTube Vlog
The final part of this tour and our cruise brings us to Canada. We got in later in the afternoon as scheduled. Originally we were going to just take a taxi into town and roam around, kinda wished we had done that. We had a whale watching tour that we had looked at prior to the cruise, we were unable to get it since it was all booked up. I read a review before we cruised about the tour and the person said that the Juneau tour was much better and this was a complete waste of money, didn't see what you were told and maybe saw a whale or two far in the distance. Well that was 100% true. We lucked out the night before and checked one of the tablets around the ship and saw the tour had two openings left. It was over $300 for this Orca watching tour. We headed to the dock and we saw a small boat come up, I joked to my wife and said, "look that's our boat right there". Never thought that it actually was. So we headed on and they did not even have enough room for everyone to go inside if it was too cold. It was a bit chilly out and as the night went on it got really cold. We were supposed to head towards San Juan Islands, which is famous for Orca's. Well we didn't go anywhere near there and had the ship in the distance the entire time. The tour guides even said before we left that they doubt we'd see much. So after a little while we saw one humpback in the far distance, saw them better from my stateroom. Then after a while we headed towards a lighthouse where a bunch of seals hangout, which was actually pretty cool. Shortly after my wife notices a smell and a green liquid coming up from the floor outside. They had busted a belt on the boat. So everyone in the back had to cram inside and wait for it to be fixed as we slowly headed back to the port. Finally after 40 minutes it was fixed and we continue to head back to port. We got into port about 45 minutes before we were supposed and since we did they said we were going to take a water tour around the city at night. Now if I wanted to see the city, wouldn't I just have gone there and not wasted my money on this excursion? So after a while of seeing lights and dark shapes we got back to port. We do not recommend booking the Orca excursion at all. We understand that seeing any whale is not a guarantee, but they could have at least went to where we were supposed to.
(Inside our dingy.)
(Yep, that was all we saw.)
Overall was Alaska worth it? Absolutely! It was amazing from start to finish for the most part. A few hiccups here and there but we would do it again in a second. It is a tough cruise since it was so scheduled from the start until we got home, so not much time to relax. It is hard to see and do everything that an Alaskan cruise has to offer, but take this page as a helpful guide along with our YouTube videos.
Here is a list of all of the Vlogs we did throughout the cruise that we've posted on our YouTube channel. Also make sure to Subscribe to our channel to keep up with all of our adventures.
